Why I Still Paddle Taiga Boards After All These Years
Sylvie Lamothe | JUN 18, 2025

People often ask me why I paddle a Taiga board, especially now that there are so many paddleboard brands on the market.
The simple answer? After years of teaching SUP yoga, leading retreats, traveling with my board, and spending countless hours on the lakes of Northern Ontario, I still genuinely love them and believe they have the best boards on the market.
When I first started incorporating stand-up paddleboarding into my yoga classes and outdoor experiences, I knew I wanted equipment that reflected not only quality and performance but also my values. I wasn't looking for the cheapest board or the trendiest design. I wanted something that felt like an extension of my business...nature-rooted, intentional, beautifully designed, and built to last.
That's exactly what I found with Taiga Board Co.
Taiga is a proudly Canadian company based in Montreal, which immediately felt like a natural fit. As someone with French Canadian roots and a business built around helping people reconnect with nature, supporting a Canadian company was important to me.
Then I learned what Taiga actually means.
The taiga is the great boreal forest that stretches across much of Canada. It's the forest I call home. It's where I paddle, where I guide retreats, where I teach SUP yoga, and where I find inspiration every single day.
The connection felt immediate.
One of the first things that drew me to Taiga was the design.
If you know me, you know I naturally gravitate toward simple, minimalist aesthetics. I don't love bright, flashy gear or loud graphics. Taiga boards have a quiet confidence about them. The earthy colours, wood-inspired details, and clean lines feel timeless.
They look like they belong on the lakes of Northern Ontario.
It might sound funny, but I genuinely think these boards look beautiful against the backdrop of the boreal forest. They fit my lifestyle, my business, and the kind of experiences I love creating through Rebel Soul.
Beautiful boards are one thing.
But the reason I've continued paddling Taiga year after year is because the quality has never let me down.
As someone who teaches SUP yoga, guides beginners, and spends long days exploring lakes, I need equipment I can trust. My boards have been used season after season, and the quality has remained consistent. They still feel solid, perform well, and have held up incredibly over the years.
One thing I've noticed with some inflatable boards is that they eventually start to flex in the middle...or what paddlers often call "banana-ing." When that happens, the board doesn't glide efficiently and you end up working harder than you need to.
Taiga uses a centre stringer in the construction, which helps the board maintain its shape and stiffness. You can absolutely feel the difference on longer paddles. The board tracks straighter, glides more smoothly, and feels solid under your feet.
Since I love spending hours exploring northern lakes, good construction is essential.
Another feature I really appreciate is the board thickness.
Many inflatable paddleboards are 6 inches thick, but several Taiga models are 4.75 inches.
That lower profile means you're standing closer to the water, lowering your centre of gravity and creating a more stable feeling on the board. For SUP yoga, this makes balancing feel more natural and connected. It also allows for a more efficient paddle stroke because you're not reaching quite as far down to the water with every stroke.
It's one of those details people don't think about until they experience it.
One feature I especially love is the removable centre carry handle on the SUP yoga board.
It sounds like a small thing, but once you start moving through yoga poses, you'll appreciate not having a hard plastic handle pressing into your hands, feet, or back. It's one of those thoughtful details that tells me these boards were designed by people who actually paddle and practice.
The quality extends beyond the board itself.
The backpacks are thick, durable, and built to last. They have plenty of storage pockets, comfortable straps, and wheels that make transporting the board so much easier. The fins, pump, paddle, and accessories all feel thoughtfully designed instead of being afterthoughts.
Everything simply feels well-made.
Over the years I've paddled several different Taiga boards depending on the adventure.
The Nano Zip has become one of my favourites for SUP yoga, shorter paddles, and travel. It's incredibly lightweight, easy to carry, packs down small, and is perfect if you're looking for something portable.
For longer paddles, I usually reach for the Borea. It's an excellent all-around board that offers great glide while still feeling stable enough for a variety of conditions.
If you're looking for a family-friendly board, want to paddle with your dog, or simply prefer extra deck space, the Thuya is a fantastic option.
One thing I appreciate is that Taiga has a board for almost every style of paddler, whether you're just getting started, heading out for long touring days, practicing SUP yoga, or introducing your family to paddling.
I don't think there's one perfect paddleboard for everyone.
If you're planning to spend the occasional afternoon floating at the cottage, your needs will be different from someone who's paddling several times a week, teaching classes, or exploring lakes for hours at a time.
For me, I wanted a board that could grow with my adventures.
A board that could handle sunrise paddles, SUP yoga classes, weekend retreats, long-distance tours, and everything in between.
After years of using Taiga boards, they've done exactly that.
I believe in these boards so much that I became a Taiga affiliate.
