How to choose the perfect yoga retreat for yourself

Perhaps you are seeking an experience that allows you to return home feeling inspired, refreshed, and reenergized, instead of a vacation that you need a vacation from. Perhaps you are craving more out of life and a chance to connect with like-minded people.
Retreats are a great way to disconnect from daily life to reconnect with yourself. But how do you choose a retreat that is right for you?
Retreats are everywhere these days. From luxurious tropical getaways to rustic forest immersions, the options are endless, and this is so inspiring. I don't put yoga retreats in the same category as a vacation. I don't believe that retreats are simply doing yoga in a pretty place; if chosen carefully, they can be life-changing and transformational.
With so many to choose from, I often have folks reaching out to me asking me how to find the perfect retreat. I've attended many retreats over the last few years, and I'm happy to share a few thoughts with you on what I consider when choosing a retreat for myself.
Choosing a retreat isn’t just about pretty photos or trending destinations. It’s about alignment. Alignment with where you are in your life, what you’re craving, and who you’re becoming.
Behind every retreat is a facilitator who leads the groups and holds space in a sacred container. The facilitator’s experience, expertise, presence, and approach can make all the difference. I know this from attending retreat myself over the last decade and leading transformational experiences for the past 5 years. Before committing, if you can, take a class, attend a workshop, or tune into their online offerings. How do they make you feel? Grounded? Safe? Seen? Do their values align with yours? I think this is so important. This is especially important for retreats that go beyond surface-level relaxation and invite deeper reflection or transformation. You can look for reviews and see how others speak about their experience. You want to be held by someone who has done their own inner work—and who can hold space with integrity.
I can't stress this enough. Don’t be afraid to send a message to the Retreat Leader or hop on a quick call. Ask your questions. Share your intentions. A good facilitator will be open to connecting with you and helping you feel at ease. This is a great way to sense the vibe—how they communicate, how they hold boundaries, how invested they are in creating a meaningful experience. As a retreat leader myself, I love it when potential guests reach out to hop on a call with me or send me a message with their questions - I want you to make an informed decision and ensure that your intentions align the retreat I'm hosting, this is really important to me.
Not all retreats are the same. Every retreat has its own rhythm and flavor. Some are structured and schedule-heavy. Others are spacious and slow. Some include hiking, adventure, or deep inner reflective work. Others focus on rest, nourishment, and gentle connection. And some are focused on deep transformation. Take time to reflect and think about what you are looking for out of the experience - how do you want to feel during and after the retreat? What’s your intention for attending a retreat? With our Rebel Retreats I focus on a balanced itinerary between scheduled activities and plenty of time for relaxation and spontaneity. Rebel Retreats focus on connection with nature and community while offering yoga, adventure, and deep reflective work for those who seek transformation.
Retreats are an investment in yourself. And while your budget matters, it’s helpful to look beyond the numbers. Instead of asking, “What’s the cheapest?” try asking:
Often, a higher-priced retreat reflects thoughtful curation, a high-quality venue, more personalized support, or a more experienced facilitator. And remember—sometimes the most affordable option can end up costing you more if it doesn’t deliver what you truly need.
The land and the space where a retreat is held matter just as much as the offerings themselves. I always look for venues that are specifically curated for retreats and transformational experience, as the space aligns perfectly with the container I’m creating for our rebel community. I also really look for venues that have an eco focus and are surround by nature because that's important for the vibe I curate for our Rebel Retreat. Take time to explore:
Some retreat centers are designed for healing, community, and immersion. Others may be newer or less equipped. It's worth checking in with the facilitator, reading past guest experiences, and ensuring the environment feels aligned.
This may be the most important guidance of all. I usually don't need that much information to make my decision in knowing if a retreat is the right fit for me. I feel into my own inner knowing. Beyond logic and checklists, I trust my gut.
Sometimes, we just ‘know' when something is calling us. Pay attention to how your body feels when you think about the retreat. Do you feel lit up? Calm? Excited? And if you feel unsure, pressured, or like you’re choosing out of fear or FOMO—that’s a good signal to pause and get curious. The right retreat will feel like a “sacred yes.” One that feels like an invitation. One that meets your current needs and gently opens the door to something more. Choosing a retreat is a deeply personal decision. It’s not about following trends or finding the fanciest space.
Choosing a retreat is about choosing an experience that mirrors your values, honours your nervous system, and helps you return home to yourself.
Whether you're craving rest, reconnection, or reinvention, the right retreat is out there waiting for you. Let it be one that truly nourishes your soul. Want help choosing a retreat that fits you? I’m always happy to chat about what to look for and how to trust your gut.
